Northern Drakensberg Traverse

( 5- 6 DAYS )This scenic Trek follows the Drakensberg escarpment past some of the most dramatic mountain views in South Africa.

The Northern Drakensberg Traverse is a wilderness hike through an isolated and for the most part, untouched part of the formidable Drakensberg Ukhahlamba World Heritage Site, the hike is off trail and the terrain is quite a challenge. Hiking in a southerly direction the escarpment with its peaks and pinnacles will be on your left and the rugged terrain of Lesotho the “Mountain Kingdom” on the right
We carry all provisions with us during the trek and pitch tents on suitably chosen sites at night. The sources of many rivers are found along the escarpment, so we are never far from clean, clear mountain water. Mountain weather is notoriously fickle, so it’s important to be prepared for hot sunny days, icy nights, snow or anything in between.

The ‘Trans-berg’ is a tremendously satisfying adventure. This is definitely the most rewarding way of experiencing South Africa’s Drakensberg and the views from the escarpment are grand. We round off the trip with a night a local Mountain Lodge, with a celebratory dinner and a well deserved soft bed!
